Samsung launches Windows 8-based ATIV Smart PC, ATIV Smart PC Pro in India


Samsung Electronics today launched a slew of Windows 8-based devices, including the ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro, a touch-enabled notebook - Series 5 ULTRA Touch, a Series 9 Ultrabook and an AMD-based Series 5 Ultrabook. 

Speaking at the launch, Jin Park, vice president - IT Solutions Business, Samsung Electronics, said, “Our Smart devices, like the ATIV Smart PC, ATIV Smart PC Pro and Samsung Notebooks, deliver seamless user experiences through convergence technologies across multiple devices. With our leadership in design and technology and Microsoft’s leadership in operating systems, we are able to provide customers with smart devices that have the most beautiful design, powerful performance and ease of use.”

The ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro are 11.6-inch notebooks that can transform into a tablet PC and are 9.9mm and 11.9mm thick, respectively. They come with capacitive 10-point full HD LCD touchscreens and feature a detachable keyboard-docking system. The ATIV Smart PC Pro is equipped with an Intel Core i5 CPU, while the ATIV Smart PC runs on an Intel Atom Z2760 processor.

In addition to touch and keyboard input, the ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro are equipped with the S Pen, which previously made an appearance with the Galaxy Note and Note II, as well as with the Galaxy Note 10.1. Just like on the Note II and the Note 10.1, the ATIV Smart PCs also feature the WACOM digitiser pen, which is capable of meeting the demands of professional designers with its 1024-level pressure sensitivity. The pre-loaded S Note application accompanies the S Pen.

For connectivity, the ATIV Smart PC comes with USB 2.0, micro HDMI and mini SD ports, while the ATIV Smart PC Pro comes with USB 3.0, micro HDMI and mini SD ports. You have two extra USB 2.0 ports on the keyboard. The ATIV Smart PC has a battery life of up to 13.5 hours, whereas the ATIV Smart PC Pro runs up to eight hours. 

The Notebook Series 5 ULTRA Touch is Samsung’s first touch-enabled Ultrabook. Packed with a 13.3-inch HD SuperBright 10-finger multi-touchscreen and 3rd generation Intel Core processor, the Series 5 ULTRA Touch comes with up to 3rd generation Intel Core i7-3517U processor, 12 GB of RAM, 500 GB of storage and 24GB ExpressCache system. It also includes an HDMI port, one USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports, a 3-in-1 multi SD card slot, Ethernet and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. It is 16.9mm in depth and 1.64kg in weight, has a metallic brushed aluminium exterior, and the bottom is made of fibreglass.

“With the arrival of Windows 8, use of notebook PCs is about to change, leading to a different demand from customers such as touch functionality but still maintaining the traditional common input methods such as keyboard and mouse,” stated Park.

Samsung’s Notebook Series 9 has a single shell body and a 15-inch screen. The Series 9 measures 14.9mm in depth and weighs 1.65kg. The Series 5 Ultrabook (Series 5 535U4C) is equipped with an AMD quad-core processor. 

“We are looking at Ultrabooks and tablet PCs as being major growth drivers for our Notebook business, which is expected to grow by over 50 percent next year,” stated Uday Bhat, Director, Samsung IT Business.

While the ATIV Smart PC Pro has a price tag of Rs 75,490, the ATIV Smart PC is priced at Rs 53,990. The Samsung Notebook Series 5 ULTRA Touch costs Rs 64,990, while the Series 9 Ultrabook is priced at Rs 107,990. The Series 5 Ultrabook costs Rs 43,990.
